Hemocyanins are respiratory proteins that are used to transport oxygen in mollusks and crustaceans, as well as in some insects. They are analogous in function to the hemoglobin found in the blood of vertebrates.

hemocyanin. (biokemi) grupp protein som hos vissa de flesta blötdjur och en del leddjur står för transporten av syrgas i blodet. Jämför: hemoglobin

Hemocyanin är inte bundet till blodkroppar, utan förekommer direkt i hemolymfan . Hemocyanins are copper-containing respiratory pigments found in many mollusks (some bivalves, many gastropods, and cephalopods) and arthropods (many crustaceans, some arachnids, and the horseshoe crab, Limulus ). They are colourless when deoxygenated but turn blue on oxygenation. Hemocyanin. Hemocyanin is an oxygen-transport protein found only in some invertebrates including many shellfish and insects.

However, the transcriptional regulation of the hemocyanin gene is still poorly understood. Hemocyanin • Hemocyanin are copper containing complexes which is present in many marine species • It occurs freely in the blood stream. It exist as polymeric form & composed of 6,12,24 & 48 units no monomeric form exists 17. Hemocyanin structure . • The oxygen binding centre is composed of a pair of copper atoms.

X-ray crystallography data on two deoxy forms, of the lobster Panulirus interruptus hemocyanin (Volbeda and Hol, 1989) and of the horseshoe crab Limulus polyphemus subunit I1 hemocya- Of the 16 hemocyanin-family isotigs, 12 were identified as hemocyanin, three as C. quadricarinatus cryptocyanin (CqCc) and one as C. quadricarinatus prophenoloxidase (CqPPO) . Four of the 12 hemocyanin isotigs were found to be identical and were, therefore, designated as a single sequence, resulting in a total of nine unique C. quadricarinatus hemocyanins (CqHc).

Djur med hemocyanin i blodet har därför ett klarblått blod! annorlunda än hemoglobin: Djur som transporterar syre med hemocyanin har inga blodkroppar. Hemocyanin is an oxygen-transport protein found only in some invertebrates including many shellfish and insects. Hemocyanin has been identified as an allergen from shrimp (Piboonpocanun et al., 2011) and as a cross-reactive allergen of crustacean, cockroach, and dust mites ( Ayuso et al., 2011 ). Hemocyanin does not occur in blood cells, but is found freely dissolved in the hemolymph.
